Tactical Story

Senegal racked up the goals on 10-man Iraq in a 5-0 victory Friday that boosted its hopes of reaching the World Cup knockout stages. Pape Gueye scored two second-half goals as the Senegalese -- vying to advance as from third place in Group I -- took advantage of a first-half red card on Iraq defender Rebin Sulaka for preventing Sadio Mané from going in on goal alone. Habib Diarra scored in the fourth minute and even though Sulaka was sent off in the 13th, Senegal didn't find the net again until Ismaila Sarr's goal in the 56th minute.

Gueye then added his two goals and fellow substitute Iliman Ndiaye netted Senegal's fifth. Senegal now has three points and a plus-two goal differential. The eight best third-place teams advance to the round of 32, with ties broken by goals scored and goal differential if necessary.

Iraq was eliminated without a point in its first World Cup appearance since 1986.

Style Clash

Senegal will seek to accept loose phases and trust their runners. Iraq are more dangerous when they can string passes together and pin the game in place. That contrast should show up quickly.

Match Intelligence Board

First 15

What to Watch in the First 15 Minutes

Watch how the first fifteen settle: Senegal want evidence that Senegal's midfield overloads produce clean wide releases or just crowded possession, while Iraq need evidence that Aymen turns long balls into support attacks or Iraq simply hand possession back.

Duel

Key Duel

Start with Sadio Mané and Aymen Hussein. One clean connection into either player could decide who spends the night chasing.

Upset Path

The Upset Path

Iraq stay live here by making the match smaller than the favorite wants. Iraq's best path is to press with two forwards, make the game emotional and use Aymen as the platform for runners. That matters because Senegal can still be hurt by the centre-forward selection headache can blunt the final action if Jackson or the alternatives do not find consistency.

Fantasy

Fantasy Teaser

The fantasy teaser is really about certainty versus leverage: Sadio Mané for the steadier route, Aymen Hussein if you expect discomfort for the favorite.

Prediction

Prediction Lens

Senegal deserve the edge, but not a relaxed one. This feels like Senegal by one or two goals unless Iraq lose the game state early.

Neutral Watch

What to Watch if You Are a Neutral Fan

Neutral fans should track the first clean counter, the first pressure spell after a turnover, and whether the game becomes controlled, stretched, or nervous before halftime.
