Saudi Arabia vs Uruguay

Tactical Story

Maxi Araújo rescued a point for Uruguay to deny Saudi Arabia another famous World Cup win as the sides drew 1-1 in Miami. The Saudis, who shocked eventual winners Argentina in their opener at the last World Cup, went ahead through Abdulelah Al-Amri in the first half but came under sustained pressure late on and failed to hold out against the two-time winners. Federico Viñas saw his header saved by Mohammed Al-Owais after 30 minutes but that was the highlight of a tepid first-half display from Uruguay.

The South Americans had already had one warning from a set-piece in the 38th minute when Al-Amri connected with a corner and forced Fernando Muslera into a fine save. Three minutes later, centreback Al-Amri opened the scoring as he reacted quickest to turn in the rebound after Muslera had kept out Mohamed Kanno's header. Vinas forced another save out of Al-Owais before the break and Uruguay dominated possession after the interval, with Manuel Ugarte hitting the post with a low effort from distance after an hour.

The pressure finally told with 10 minutes remaining as Araujo steered home an equaliser from close range after Vinas' header had been saved by Al-Owais. Substitute Brian Rodríguez curled an effort wide from the edge of the box as Uruguay sought a winner and Al-Owais made excellent saves from Nicolás de la Cruz and Federico Valverde in stoppage time.

Saudi Arabia and Uruguay want different kinds of pressure. The former look to mix patient spells with quicker releases when space opens; the latter need enough disruption to string passes together and pin the game in place.

Match Intelligence Board

First 15

What to Watch in the First 15 Minutes

Watch how the first fifteen settle: Saudi Arabia want evidence that Al Juwayr can connect attacks without leaving the midfield screen too exposed, while Uruguay need evidence that the wingers get behind defenders or Uruguay are forced into hopeful central attacks.

Duel

Key Duel

Start with Salem Al-Dawsari and Darwin Núñez. One clean connection into either player could decide who spends the night chasing.

Upset Path

The Upset Path

Saudi Arabia need discipline before ambition. If they reach the decisive half-hour within one action, their preferred route becomes much more dangerous. Saudi Arabia's best path is to stay brave but compact, then let Salem or Al Juwayr attack the moment a favourite overcommits.

Fantasy

Fantasy Teaser

Confirmed starts matter here. Darwin Núñez offers the more stable route, while Salem Al-Dawsari needs the match to stay close enough for attacking returns.

Prediction

Prediction Lens

Back Uruguay to manage the decisive phases, while respecting Saudi Arabia's route to a tight game. The working band is Uruguay by one or two goals.

Neutral Watch

What to Watch if You Are a Neutral Fan

Neutral fans should track the first clean counter, the first pressure spell after a turnover, and whether the game becomes controlled, stretched, or nervous before halftime.
