Netherlands vs Japan

Tactical Story

Japan hit back twice to start their World Cup campaign with an entertaining 2-2 draw against the Netherlands. The Dutch were denied a victory in their the World Cup Group F opener when Koki Ogawa's 88th-minute header took a deflection off Daichi Kamada before going in at the AT&T Stadium in Dallas. After a drab first half where chances were few and far between, the came to life when an unmarked Virgil van Dijk headed home in the 51st minute from Liverpool teammate Ryan Gravenberch's cross.

Netherlands' lead lasted just six minutes as Takefusa Kubo passed to Keito Nakamura, who drifted outside the area before rifling low into the net via a ricochet from Jan Paul van Hecke. Ronald Koeman's side went ahead again in the 64th minute when Crysencio Summerville cut in from the right on to his weaker left foot, ignoring the overlapping Denzel Dumfries, and firing excellently beyond Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki and in off the post. Japan threw caution to the wind after going behind a second time, with head coach Hajime Moriyasu introducing all five substitutes.

And the move was vindicated as they started to pen back their opponents before the equaliser came in the closing moments. A corner from Junya Ito saw fellow substitute Ogawa rise highest in the area and his header took a final telling touch from Kamada, with Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen only able to parry into his net.

Match Intelligence Board

First 15

What to Watch in the First 15 Minutes

Netherlands will judge the opening by whether the midfield three protects De Jong or leaves him defending too many broken plays. Japan are looking for signs that Japan's wing-backs and wide attackers pin opponents back or have to defend too deep.

Duel

Key Duel

Memphis Depay and Takefusa Kubo frame the match. The team that gets its main threat facing goal more often should like the script.

Upset Path

The Upset Path

The longer this remains level, the more credible Japan become. Japan's best path is to press intelligently, combine quickly around the box and trust Moriyasu to adjust before the opponent does. Netherlands must avoid letting midfield lacks a natural ball-winning holder, so De Jong and Reijnders can be exposed if the third midfielder is wrong.

Fantasy

Fantasy Teaser

Memphis Depay is the obvious safe-side read if the start is confirmed. Takefusa Kubo is more of a swing pick tied to game state, restarts, or a transition-heavy script.

Prediction

Prediction Lens

Netherlands should create the stronger sequence of chances. A a draw or a one-goal game outcome fits unless Japan score first.

Neutral Watch

What to Watch if You Are a Neutral Fan

Neutral fans should track the first clean counter, the first pressure spell after a turnover, and whether the game becomes controlled, stretched, or nervous before halftime.
