Tactical Story

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Ismael Saibari scored only 72 seconds into the game and Morocco beat Scotland 1-0 at the World Cup on Friday to keep alive their chances of advancing to a second straight knockout round. Saibari slipped behind two Scotland defenders and Brahim Díaz dropped the ball over the top to him.

Saibari gathered and blasted it into the top left corner of the net, well outside the reach of goalkeeper Angus Gunn. Morocco, who reached the semifinals at the last World Cup in Qatar, drew 1-1 with Brazil in its Group C opener. Scotland, who haven't gotten out of the group stage in their previous eight previous World Cup appearances, beat Haiti 1-0 in their first match.

Saibari also scored Morocco's goal against Brazil. Morocco nearly scored another in the 52nd minute when a header by Bilal El Khannouss off Achraf Hakimi's corner kick was battled down by Gunn. Scotland had a chance in first-half stoppage time when Andy Robertson sent a cross at John McGinn, who couldn't get a foot on it near the back post.

As Scotland pressed for an equalizer in the closing minutes, Morocco had a pair of good chances to add to their wide both both missed the target. In the 81st minute there was another penalty claim ignored when Scott McTominay was tackled by El Aynaoui inside the box. The Napoli midfielder and substitute Lyndon Dykes caused further problems but Scotland ran out of time -- but not hope.

In the 76th minute there was a minute's applause from the Tartan Army in tribute to fan Donny Strathie, 76, who died in Boston on Sunday. Information from PA and The Associated Press was used in this recap.

Match Intelligence Board

First 15

What to Watch in the First 15 Minutes

Early clue for Morocco: whether Hakimi is released high without leaving the right side open behind him. For Scotland, the opening question is whether Robertson and McGinn combine high on the left or Scotland are forced into hopeful crosses.

Duel

Key Duel

Achraf Hakimi versus John McGinn is the easiest shorthand for this match. If one of them starts attacks higher and cleaner, that side should own the better territory.

Upset Path

The Upset Path

If Scotland are going to pull this off, it probably comes from keeping the score tight, waiting for a mistake, and making their main route land at the right moment. Scotland's best path is to make midfield arrivals decide the game before the striker question becomes the whole story. The favorite's risk is if the push for a more proactive style stretches the old compactness, the defence loses the thing that made Morocco dangerous.

Fantasy

Fantasy Teaser

Achraf Hakimi has the stronger minutes-and-role case. John McGinn is viable only for managers who expect Scotland to spend meaningful time attacking.

Prediction

Prediction Lens

Morocco are still the lean, with Morocco by one or two goals the likeliest range, but that read depends on them preventing Scotland from making it the kind of game they prefer.

Neutral Watch

What to Watch if You Are a Neutral Fan

Neutral fans should track the first clean counter, the first pressure spell after a turnover, and whether the game becomes controlled, stretched, or nervous before halftime.
