Brazil vs Haiti

Tactical Story

Matheus Cunha scored twice as Brazil moved top of World Cup Group C with a 3-0 win over Haiti. Vinicius Junior netted the third, with all of the goals coming in a first half during which Brazil looked markedly improved from their insipid opening draw against Morocco. The result ensures Haiti, who lost to Scotland 1-0 in their first game, can no longer reach the knockout phase.

Brazil ran riot in the first half, helped by some generous defending from the Caribbean side, whose high line gave Cunha, Raphinha and Vinicius plenty of opportunities to run in behind. Raphinha had a 12th-minute strike disallowed for offside. The Barcelona forward latched on to Bruno Guimaraes' through ball before finishing well, only for the assistant's flag to correctly signal he had moved a fraction early.

Ten minutes later Raphinha was sent clear again, but the former Leeds player lifted his finish wide of the target, with the offside flag once more raised. A minute later Brazil went ahead through Cunha. Vinicius cut in from the left and his curling effort was parried by Haiti goalkeeper Johny Placide to leave the Manchester United forward with a simple finish.

Cunha scored his second after 36 minutes as Haiti lost the ball in midfield, Vinicius played the former Wolves man in on the left and he smashed a first-time finish into the roof of the net. An excellent start for the five-time winners was tarnished somewhat as Raphinha went off before half-time with what looked to be a hamstring injury, with Bournemouth teenager Rayan replacing him. Vinicius went from provider to scorer in first-half stoppage time as the Real Madrid forward latched on to Lucas Paqueta's lofted pass and slotted the ball past the helpless Placide.

Haiti produced their first shot of the game after 48 minutes as Danilo gave the ball away cheaply and Sunderland's Wilson Isidor - on as one of two half-time substitutes - hit a tame effort at Alisson Becker. Alisson denied Haiti their first World Cup goal since 1974 with a point-blank save as Ricardo Ade headed a corner goalwards. Jean-Kevin Duverne prodded an effort wide for Haiti, while at the other end substitute Gabriel Martinelli saw an effort tipped against the crossbar by Placide.

Douglas Santos fired over, Endrick had an effort ruled out for offside and Ederson put a good chance wide but Brazil were unable to add to their tally in the second half. Isidor drew an excellent save from Allison and Dominique Simon's stoppage-time effort from distance was also kept out by the Liverpool goalkeeper as Haiti became the first side to be eliminated from this year's tournament.

Style Clash

This matchup becomes clearer if Brazil can step high early and make the first pass uncomfortable. It becomes much less comfortable for them if Haiti get to string passes together and pin the game in place instead.

Match Intelligence Board

First 15

What to Watch in the First 15 Minutes

The first quarter-hour should tell us whether Casemiro has control around him or Brazil's attackers leave the midfield chasing counters; Haiti need to show whether Bellegarde receives with runners ahead or has to rescue attacks after turnovers.

Duel

Key Duel

The clearest duel is Vinícius Júnior against Wilson Isidor. This game may turn on which reference point receives service without having to come too far for it.

Upset Path

The Upset Path

Haiti's route begins without the ball: protect the central spaces, stay level, then attack the phase Brazil manage least comfortably. Haiti's best path is to accept some risk, make Isidor a real outlet and turn the game into a race before the favourite settles.

Fantasy

Fantasy Teaser

Fantasy players will naturally start with Vinícius Júnior, but Wilson Isidor becomes interesting if this match stays tense and low-event.

Prediction

Prediction Lens

The matchup points to Brazil, with Brazil by one or two goals a better guide than any comfortable-win narrative.

Neutral Watch

What to Watch if You Are a Neutral Fan

Neutral fans should track the first clean counter, the first pressure spell after a turnover, and whether the game becomes controlled, stretched, or nervous before halftime.
