Belgium vs Senegal
Tactical Story
Youri Tielemans saved Belgium World Cup hopes by converting a contentious penalty in added time at the end of extra time to win 3-2 having scored an 89th-minute equaliser to keep the game alive against Senegal. With just four minutes remaining, the African nation were cruising to what was a deserved place in the last 16 thanks to goals from Sunderland's Habib Diarra and a brilliant effort from Crystal Palace forward Ismaïla Sarr. However, Belgium's all-time record scorer Romelu Lukaku's 92nd international goal gave Rudi Garcia's side hope when there had been none and Tielemans headed home Leandro Trossard's cross two minutes and 38 seconds later.
Twenty minutes earlier, the pair had been separated by team-mate Nicolas Raskin as they exchanged heated words as frustrations boiled over at the hydration break. With a shoot-out looming, Dodi Lukébakio clipped the crossbar only for VAR to spot a foul by Lamine Camara on Tielemans in the build-up and after a seven-minute delay a penalty was awarded. In January, Senegal walked off in the Africa Cup of Nations final in protest at Morocco being awarded a late spot-kick and although they returned and went on to win the game, they were subsequently stripped of the title.
There were no such antics this time but after some gamesmanship on the penalty spot, with Pathé Ciss throwing himself to the ground, Tielemans held his nerve to send Belgium through with the latest goal in World Cup history, with 124 minutes and 44 seconds on the clock. It was harsh on Senegal, who took a first-half lead when Sadio Mane's inswinging cross was flicked on by Sarr's twisting header and Diarra followed in as the ball bounced back off the upright. His goal was the eighth scored by a Sunderland player at this summer's tournament, with only Real Madrid and Paris St Germain players having contributed more.
Senegal's second was both simple and brilliant: Sarr superbly controlled Moussa Niakhate's long ball on his chest, having exploited the space between centre-backs Arthur Theate and Brandon Mechele, before firing home.

Style Clash
Belgium bring 4 tournament matches, 9 goals for, 4 against; Senegal bring 4 tournament matches, 10 goals for, 9 against. The tactical contrast is Belgium's attack relies on individual brilliance from playmakers like Kevin De Bruyne and Leandro Trossard, who provide clinical finishing and creative service from both open play and set-piece situations. While the team struggled for fluency early in the tournament, they have demonstrated late-game resilience through Romelu Lukaku’s presence and Youri Tielemans’ composure in high-pressure moments. Against that, Senegal's defensive read is Senegal's defensive structure proved fragile, conceding nine goals across four matches while struggling with individual errors and lapses in concentration from key personnel. Goalkeeper Édouard Mendy demonstrated inconsistency, notably failing to secure routine shots and losing control of the ball in high-pressure situations.

Upset Path
The Upset Path
Senegal's upset path is to keep the match narrow long enough for one repeatable weapon to matter. The risk for Belgium is not reputation; it is whether their weakest tournament pattern shows up under knockout pressure: Injuries, an unsettled XI and a top-heavy squad make defensive balance the recurring problem.
Fantasy
